What does difficulty with self-regulation look like?
Self-regulation (emotions, thoughts, energy, behavior) habits that may impact your teen's ability to participate and enjoy activities in school, after school activities, or with family:
- Difficulty controlling impulses
- Unable to bounce back from an upsetting event
- Unable to calm following excitement
- Unusually low or high energy
- Overreacts to situations more than peers
- Easily frustrated
- Unable to focus or re-focus on a task
- Struggles with anxiety
- Struggles to behave appropriately in social settings
Difficulties that can be observed in Adjusting, Thinking & Doing/Executive function skills:
- Forgets how to complete tasks in sequence
- Has a difficult time staying focused on tasks and jumps from one task to another
- Does not check work or has trouble completing homework timely
- Unable to keep themselves from blurting out answers or is generally impulsive
- Can be the class clown inappropriately
- Has difficulty applying concepts or information to solve new problems
- Needs reminders for routine things
- Has a hard time following directions
- Loses or misplaces homework assignments or belongings more than usual
- The locker, desk, or backpack is always messy to the point that items are hard to find
- Has difficulty adapting when changes happen without warning
- Difficulty prioritizing tasks
- Has trouble starting projects or assignments
- Does not ask for help when needed
- Tends to have difficulty reviewing their performance and making adjustments as needed
- Tends to give up quickly instead of persisting with a challenging task
- Trouble organizing thoughts to put down on paper or organizing belongings
